Diagnosis and medical treatment of solid tumors is performed in the department under the most modern diagnostic and therapeutic regimes approved in Bulgaria and the European Union.
Different medications are used for drug treatment. Some of these may be chemotherapeutic drugs (cytotoxic) designed to remove tumor cells, others to suppress tumor development and its spread (targeting agents, cytostatics). There are also those that include hormones and supportive therapies.
In general, chemotherapy is a chemical treatment of tumors. Together with surgery and radiotherapy, chemotherapy forms one of the major segments in the treatment of tumors. It is applied very strictly, depending on the type of tumor and the patient’s anamnestic data. In certain types of tumors, chemotherapy is the only possible treatment method. Some tumors require sequential or simultaneous chemotherapy and radiation therapy, while there are ones that require chemotherapy before or after surgery. The overall duration and frequency of administration depends entirely on the chemotherapy regimen chosen according to the condition of the individual patient.
Chemotherapeutic procedures are applied under the supervision of specialists, qualified nurses trained to cope with the psychological and physical needs of cancer patients.
Treatment of patients with end-stage oncological diseases, i. the period in which, regardless of known and applied therapeutic actions, the condition of the patient is deteriorating, the progressive course of the disease can not be discontinued and will result in the death of the patient sooner or later but within a limited time . This is the period in which the active treatment applied is not intended to cure the patient, but only to control the pain and other symptoms experienced by the patient in order to improve the quality of life.
