Medical oncology ward, including beds for daily systematic antitumor therapy with short stay (up to 12 hours) and beds for palliative care – second level of competence,has 72 beds, 60 of them therapeutic beds,including 6 beds for short stay (up to 12 hours) and 12 beds for palliative care, performs activities according to medical standard “Medical oncology”.
The ward performs diagnostic and drug treatment of solid tumors according to modern and accepted in Bulgaria and EU standards, diagnostic and therapeutic schemes.
Different drugs are used for medication treatment. Some of them can be chemotherapy drugs (cytotoxins), created to remove the tumor cells, other – to suppress the tumor development and his diffusion (target agents, cytostatics). Also there are such that include hormones and supporting therapy.
In general, chemotherapy is tumor treatment with chemical substances. Together with the surgery and radiotherapy it forms one of the major segments in tumor treatment. It is applied very strictly, depending on the type of the tumor and the anamnestic data for the patient. For some types of tumors the chemotherapy is the only possible treatment method. Some tumors demand consecutive or simultaneous application of chemo- and radiotherapy, and there are such that demand chemotherapy prior to or post to surgical intervention. The total duration and the frequency of application depends entirely on the scheme of chemotherapy, chosen in compliance with the condition of the patient.
Chemotherapy procedures are applied under the observation of specialists, qualified nurses, trained to cope with the psychological and physical needs of cancer patients.
The treatment of patients with malignancies in terminal stage, that is, the period in which despite the well known and applied therapeutic activities the condition of the patient worsens, the progressive steps of the disease can not be terminated and will lead to lethal outcome soon or later, but limited in a certain period of time. This is the period in which the application of active treatment does not aim to cure the patient but to control pain and other symptoms in order to increase the quality of life.
Seven doctors work here, two of them having two majors- Internal diseases and Oncology and one with major in General surgery and Child surgery. They have completed training on diagnostic and treatment of the basic diagnostic groups of oncologic diseases. Regulated activities concerning clinical and therapeutic researches in medical oncology are performed.
